Many people today dream of owning their own business but have no idea what kind or how to get started. The reasons for wanting to start one are as varied as the people! Every year, small businesses both begin and end, largely due to a lack of planning and research. People get lost or bogged down with all the finer details that owning and running a business entail. Sadder still are those businesses that never make it off the ground because the ‘back office’ side and paperwork can be very overwhelming, depending on what industry you are trying to enter. Thankfully, there are lots of people who have been down the same road and have shared their wisdom to help future micro and cottage businesses survive and thrive!
Enter Gregg Carter of TheRuralEconomist.com and his new ebook, “Micro and Cottage Businesses, What You Need to Know and How to Get Started.” The read is a quick one but the information given will keep you busy for days, weeks, potentially months as you follow along and establish your own micro business. The book helps you define what it is you want to do for your business, walks you through steps to make sure you have proper licensing and even covers the basics when it comes to business taxes!
The thing that struck home with me was in the introduction because it is something that 90% (or more) of the working class on the whole planet can relate to:
“Very few people are truly happy with their vocation. The average person in the United States goes to a job they hate, in a car they don’t own, to pay for things they cannot afford. This is not the way it was supposed to be. I cannot tell you how many people I know that the highlight of their day is a television show or sports event. There is nothing wrong with this, but I believe life is supposed to be so much more.”
What I appreciated the most about this book (other than it was clear and to the point) was the way the author conveyed everything in plain english, no dictionary or business degree needed to understand it. Chapter two even goes over the reasons why you shouldn’t start your own business. If you are looking for a “get rich quick” scheme or are not really interested in investing considerable time and effort into your venture, it may be best not to start (as explained in the book). Finally, instead of just throwing facts and numbers at you, it shows you how certain concepts actually apply to owning a business. There are even suggestions for low or no cost ventures!
