I have yet to meet a prepper, homesteader, survivalist, or self-sufficiency advocate that does not have a voracious reading appetite. Whether that is a book, blog posts, or DIY articles – we gobble it up faster than kids with Halloween candy. For those who are just beginning their journeys, there is SO MUCH to wade through and you don’t really know what is ‘good’ and what it outdated or just a bunch of useless fluff. Sometimes I have read some fantastic books on preparedness, survival, homesteading, and even some great fiction that fits the genre and general lifestyle of those categories. I even wrote one!
I decided since it is Christmas, (and also the ‘reading time of year’ for most homesteaders) that I would go through and share the ones I liked the best and found the most helpful in their respective categories. I also included some good ol’ fiction, including my new book! Please keep in mind that the lines between a homesteader and a prepper are very blurry. So are the lines between a ‘prepper’ and ‘survivalist,’ though the general populace doesn’t differentiate between them much. Since I have yet to find a word that covers all three, I give you “Books for the Prepared.” 🙂
Preparedness
- Countdown to Preparedness: 52 Week Course to Total Disaster Readiness, by Jim Cobb
- The Prepper’s Blueprint: The Step-By-Step Guide To Help You Through Any Disaster, by Pennington and Luther
- FOR KIDS: Jake and Miller’s Big Adventure, by Bernie Carr
- Urban Emergency Plan: Readiness Plans for the Cities and Suburbs, by Jim Cobb
- Prepper’s Home Defense, by Jim Cobb
Survival
- How to Survive a Nuclear Bomb, by Tin Hat Ranch (Kindle only)
- Food Storage for Self-Sufficiency and Survival, by Angela Paskett
Homesteading
It can be very difficult to find just one book about homesteading. Furthermore, homesteading means different things to different people. Listed are books I have read and own!
- Fox Fire Series, by Eliot Willigton (There are several of these books that cover everything homesteading)
- Simply Canning, by Sharon Peterson
- Mini-Farming: Self-Sufficiency on ¼ Acre, by Brett L. Markham
- The Backyard Homestead, by Carleen Madigan
Fiction
- Aftermath: A Story of Survival, by LeAnn Edmondson and Mike Kosinski
- Going Home, by A. American (This is Book 1 in the Survivalist Series. I lost a LOT of sleep while reading these!)
- One Second After, by William R. Forstchen
- Lucifer’s Hammer, by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle
I have read em all and highly recommend them as gifts this year. If your stocking is big enough, they could even count as a stocking stuffer!

Just would like to get an update on book 2 of the Jimmy Walker series. I thought it was to have been released in September.

It is going to the publisher within 48 hours! It is my hope to have it ready on Amazon by Thanksgiving. Barring any publisher issues, I should make it!
