This one is a little off the beaten path for my blog here. While this is not about gardening, homesteading, self-reliance, or ‘prepping;’ it is something we can all relate to: decluttering. Most people have keys – a LOT of keys. Keys for work, home, sheds, padlocks, gun cases and….you get the idea. If you’re a maintenance worker or manage an apartment complex, chances are you have so much weight on the key ring that the ignition of your car quivers in fear when you get ready to go somewhere. You may be one of those people who literally stand in front of the door, trying 5 keys that look similar enough that you have to try them all before you get the right one. There are not too many options out there for ways to organize your keys.
I found the solution for me. I found the one invention out there that not only organizes your keys and keeps them nice and tidy; it can also expand or shrink to suit your needs on a whim. Enter the Key Smart. It sounds silly but I am in love with my new ‘key ring’. It is genius in my opinion, specifically because of the simplicity of the design. It is also made in the USA which is another huge plus for me.
Here is what my keys looked like before I switched over to Key Smart. The fingernail clippers are there for size reference. Ugly, eh?
Yeah…I know, I know. I am one of those people whose ignition trembles in fear as I approach the car. It is heavy, cumbersome and yes, I am also one of those people who stand there a couple of minutes trying to find the right key sometimes. While the Key Smart is not designed for the large plastic-covered car keys, there IS a nice key ring strategically placed at one end to accommodate those kinds of keys and alarm FOBs. One very nice feature is you can put a thumb (or flash) drive on the Key Smart as well. Being a blogger, I find it extremely helpful to have a thumb drive on hand at the oddest times.
Key Smart has a 54 second video that shows you how to assemble and expand their product, versus having printed instructions which I can really appreciate. Most of us have been stumped by the assembly instructions of various projects at one point or another. The installation of my keys into the set up was extremely easy and did not take very long. In fact, it took me longer to figure out what key went where than it did to move all the keys over. Talk about a declutter! I think I lost 2 pounds of weight! The unit comes apart using a penny or dime (if you don’t have a flat head screwdriver handy) in the silver screws on the ends. Simply stack your keys until filled and replace the screws. Viola! Done! The coolest thing is you can expand these to suit YOUR needs with minimal effort. They also come in different colors which is helpful for me personally as I have a 2 different sets of keys.
My keys now take up considerably less space and it has been 3 days since I have been poked, stabbed, or jabbed in the leg as I sit down, stand up, stoop, and walk around at work. I haven’t accidentally set the alarms off on the cars by simply holding the bulk with keys pressing into the buttons. It is all ‘little stuff’ but sometimes, those little things really matter. It is easy to just accept things as they are (hence why my key ring got so massive) but when you pay attention and then make the change, it makes you wonder why you put up with it for so long. 🙂
If you aren’t one to wait to see if you might win, you can check out their site or head over to Amazon for more information and pricing. For myself, this is the last ‘key ring’ I will ever need to buy. They even ship internationally and have Key Smarts to accommodate maintenance sized keys which tend to be larger.
